My Top 5 Essentials for my Home Office

Happy Wednesday!

A little over a year ago is when I finally took the plunge into a full-time, remote position with the flexibility I needed. I was burnt out (if that’s what you can call it at age 26) and I needed a change. It doesn’t hurt that I was able to spend my day with the pup either. The transition happened so fast that my first desk at home was a plastic folding table. I started to invest in making my home office a priority project because I was spending so much time there every day and wanted it to feel like an extension of my home. Here are my must-have items for my home office from someone who spends over 40% of her time at her desk.

  1. A quality desk – This is first because it was the hardest for me to choose – it took MONTHS for me to find a desk that fit my style, but was also a quality, functional piece. I finally found one at Wayfair that could be used as both a corner, sit-down desk AND a standing desk! It was the best of both worlds. Plus, it is a quality (heavy) piece of furniture that beats any Ikea alternative you’re currently thinking of buying. And, of course, it’s now on sale.
  2. A pretty desk lamp – Finding a desk lamp for me was super simply because I am always looking at them at Target, but I never really needed one. What I love about Target’s lamp collection is that you can mix-and-match your base with the shade and create your own unique look. Browse the mix-and-match shades and bases at Target here. And they aren’t pricey at all. I ended up paying about $35 for the entire lamp. If you’re looking for something even cheaper than that, I would look at your local Tuesday Morning or Christmas Tree Shop for some good deals.
  3. A relaxing candle – My favorite candle scent to burn is Eucalyptus Mint from Bath & Body Works. I usually buy them in their Wallflower scents, but there’s nothing like burning a candle when you’re hard at work. If you’re not a candle person, I am a huge fan of the Bath & Body Works Wallflower plugins. They have every scent you could want and the cutest designs for the plugins so you can match your style.
  4. A funny/motivating name plate – When I lived in Philly about 2 years ago, there was this one home store my co-workers and I would visit at least once a week. It was primarily Philadelphia-themed home goods, but you could find the most unique home decor and gifts. They had these desk nameplates by ShopHeSaidSheSaid.com that I always wanted, but I could never decide on just one. Last weekend while I was in the city, I finally decided to get one and bring it to my home office! They’re just fun to have. My favorite is the “Girls Just Wanna be CEO”.
  5. A comfy chair – This one is a given and it probably should have been my main priority. I bought my desk first and because it was a standing desk, I decided that I didn’t need a really good chair so I bought the cheapest “ergonomic” plastic chair off Amazon, which lastest about a week. Then, I went and bough a Yogibo which was AMAZING, but since I’m on video calls for work all the time, I found myself constantly rolling all over the place. Finally, I settled and found this one at Office Depot. It’s comfy and stylish – perfect for what I needed at home.

Do you have your own office essential I didn’t mention? Share it in the comments! I’m always looking for new ways to spruce up my work space.
